Speak Geek #3: That Bridget is a Ringer for Buffy

Yesterday I blogged about Buffy the Vampire Slayer for Speak Out With Your Geek Out and that happened to coincide with Our Lady of Vampire Slayerage's return to television last night on the CW network with Ringer.

Here's the geek angle: I only tuned into Ringer because Sarah Michelle Gellar stars.

Yep, that's it.

I don't watch much television and I hadn't followed the promotion around this show, but Buffy is on it!

In Ringer, Buffy, - I mean Gellar - plays Bridget, a recovering alcoholic stripper/prostitute under witness protection following the mob murder of another stripper. Bridget believes nobody can protect her, not even sexy FBI agent Richard Alpert and his long, dreamy eyelashes. So, she escapes to the New York home of her estranged twin sister Siobhan. Unlike Bridget, icy, society-wife Siobhan seems to have it together - nice homes, a great wardrobe, a handsome husband, and a cute kid in another country. When Siobhan mysteriously disappears, Bridget finds an out to her troubles and decides to replace her, but she soons discovers that Siobhan is hiding a lot behind those big Chanel sunglasses.

Is it cliche? Yeah, a little bit. It's not a wholly new and original idea and it is a bit soapy, but it's well crafted. We're talking about CW here, the network that combined UPN and the WB, which has given us Charmed, Dawson's Creek, Supernatural, Roswell, and Veronica Mars. Buffy aside, it may not be great television, but it's often fun and popular television and much better than many alternatives. Ringer seems to know where it's going, which is a quality I like in a show, and offered a number of conflicts to explore in future episodes. There's mystery and suspense, a little ass-kicking, and, of course, Gellar is excellent as is the supporting cast. I'm willing to give this show a few more episodes and see how it goes.

Did you watch Ringer last night? What did you think of it?
