Speak Geek #1: 13 Things That Didn't Exist in the Days of 9/11

Where my geek magic happens. See my Kindle and lip balm?

I might have missed this wonderful effort to Speak Out with Your Geek Out if it hadn't been for my friend Rowan who shared a Twitter message about it.

The idea here is to take a stance against stereotypes of geeks by showing how awesome geek sauce really is. The event is Sept. 12-16 and, as you can see, I'm a day late in starting, but I'll catch up.

As a nation, we've spent the last few days talking about the ways the world has changed following 9/11. We can talk about loss and fear or education and interfaith work, but let's not do that today. Instead let's talk about what a different world of technology 2001 was.

Here is a small list of things that I love today, which have definetely contributed to my growing geekness, that didn't exist in September 2001.
  1. iTunes Music Store (added to iTunes in 2003)
  2. Skype (2003)
  3. WordPress (2003)
  4. Second Life (2003. BIG thanks to Zenfaerie for the reminder!)
  5. Facebook (2004)
  6. Firefox (2004)
  7. Gmail (2004)
  8. YouTube (2005)
  9. Twitter(2006)
  10. iPhone (2007)
  11. Amazon Kindle (2007)
  12. Google Chrome (2008)
  13. FourSquare (2009)
I can only imagine how differently 9/11 would have been documented if the iPhone, YouTube, and Twitter had been around.

So, can you think of any others?
