Pumpkin spice is neither pumpkin nor a spice (discuss!). Pumpkin spice is just a blend of warm spices such as cinnamon ginger, nutmeg, allspice, and sometimes clove. For me, this is a part of the enchantment of the fall. The air is filled with this aroma. It's in foods we lovingly make for our families and friends when we gather at moons, sabbats, and Thanksgiving. My mouth waters just thinking about pies, breads, and lattes. It's artificially created and added to many seasonal crafts and decor such as wreathes, pine cones, and candles. It's just everywhere.
In Santeria, children of Oshun are forbidden from eating pumpkin because it's sacred to her. For years, I've hoped that I'm not her child only so that I don't have to give up pumpkin. If it turns out that I am, I figured I would try to negotiate this with her. But I realize now that it's not really the taste of pumpkin that I love so much. Pumpkin alone doesn't really taste like much. No, what I love is the aroma of pumpkin spice, which is often added to pumpkin foods to enhance flavor and people have to come to associate these blends of spices with pumpkin.
What's your favorite scent?
